William Oldroyd

In 2008, William Oldroyd became Director in Residence at the Young Vic Theatre, London where he directed a bold reworking of Ibsen’s Ghosts. This residency took him to the Maly Theatre, St. Petersburg to work with visionary director Lev Dodin. He has also directed Kean by Sartre at the Galaxy Theatre, Tokyo; Two Noble Kinsmen by Shakespeare/Fletcher at the Swan Theatre, RSC; Scenes From an Execution by Howard Barker at the Hackney Empire Theatre; A Woman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde at the Tricycle Theatre, London; and an experimental production of Comedy of Vanity by the Nobel Laureate Elias Canetti at the Underbelly, Edinburgh. Opera direction includes Don Pasquale by Donizetti at Sadler’s Wells; Teseo by Handel both for English Touring Opera; La Serva Padrona by Pergolesi and To Hell and Back by Jake Heggie in Viana do Castello, Portugal. As dramaturg, Mr. Oldroyd has worked closely with choreographer Cathy Marston at Ballet Bern, Switzerland on productions of Romeo and Juliet and Flight of Gravity: a reworking of The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. He continues to direct and sit on the audition panel at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. William Oldroyd’s first short film is called Christ’s Dog and continues his valuable collaboration with Howard Barker.
